Rangefinder is Fayetteville’s specialty coffee bar — a craft coffee shop on South Court Street that takes the coffee seriously. They use La Terza beans, ethically sourced and roasted to order, with a full range of espresso drinks, pour-overs, cold brew, and specialty lattes like the honey cinnamon and salted maple. The interior aesthetic leans toward natural light, photography, and a hip-hop sensibility that sets it apart from the typical mountain town café.

Good Wi-Fi makes it a solid remote work stop. Open seven days a week from 7am to 4pm — the right hours for a pre-hike coffee or a mid-morning work session.

Cathedral Café is the anchor of Fayetteville’s morning — a converted church on the main drag with homemade soups, pastries, and reliably good coffee. The carrot cake has its own fan base; if Wendy made it that day, get it. Good for solo work sessions and groups alike.

Arrive before 9am if there’s somewhere to be. It gets busy. Efficient when there’s a checkout clock running, which is why it’s the default last-morning stop for most guests staying downtown.

Gran Robbie’s is in Ansted on the Midland Trail — about 20 minutes from Fayetteville, just off the northern edge of New River Gorge National Park and 0.3 miles from the Hawks Nest Rail Trail trailhead. Espresso, coffee, breakfast, and lunch in a setting that earns the drive. Their signature espresso is Coal River Coffee Company’s Almost Heaven; they also do a Hawks Nest Roast, a collaboration with Coal River.

The pet-friendly outdoor patio is the reason to go on a good morning. If the day plan includes Hawks Nest State Park or the Endless Wall area, Gran Robbie’s is a natural first stop.

Pistos Coffee is a community-focused shop in Oak Hill — about 15 minutes from Fayetteville — run largely by volunteers with a goal of delivering quality coffee at accessible prices. The setup is relaxed and spacious, with lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, fruit smoothies, and nitro cold brew on tap alongside baked goods. A different atmosphere from the downtown Fayetteville options; good for a quiet morning.

Note the hours: Pistos is closed Sunday and Monday. Worth building into a day that already takes you through Oak Hill toward ACE Adventure Resort or Beckley.

Water Stone Outdoors is primarily a gear shop — one of the best outdoor equipment stores in the region, open since 1994 — with a café tucked in the back that most visitors walk past without noticing. Quieter than Rangefinder or Cathedral Café in the mornings, and the combination of being able to pick up a forgotten piece of gear and get a coffee before heading to the trailhead is genuinely useful.

Not a destination coffee spot, but a practical one if the morning starts with a gear check anyway. Worth knowing about.
