If a group only has time for one hike during the trip, this is it.

Long Point Trail winds through hardwood forest to a rocky peninsula jutting out over the New River Gorge — the only place in the park where you can stand at the same elevation as the Bridge and look directly at it from the side. The view at the end is one of the best in the park and feels genuinely earned. The trailhead is off Long Point Road in Fayetteville — low traffic, easy parking. Endless Wall runs along the gorge rim with sustained views of the river and sandstone cliffs below. The midpoint destination most hikers aim for is Diamond Point — a rocky promontory with views looking directly down the river. The trail surface is rockier than Long Point and requires more attention underfoot, but the continuous scenery makes it worth the focus. The trailhead is off Lansing-Edmond Road, about 10 minutes from Fayetteville. Dogs are allowed on leash. Most people do a portion out-and-back rather than the full one-way distance.

Good to Know

  • Trailhead near Canyon Rim area off Lansing-Edmond Rd
  • Views of rock climbers on the sandstone wall below
  • Rhododendron tunnels are spectacular in late spring
  • Dogs on leash required throughout

This is the trail most visitors walking the Canyon Rim Boardwalk never find — and one of the most rewarding in the park. Kaymoor Miners Trail descends 820 feet into the gorge via a series of wooden staircases and switchbacks, ending at the ruins of the Kaymoor coking ovens — an industrial site abandoned in the early 1900s. The descent is manageable. The return climb is not casual — plan for twice the time going up as coming down. The trailhead is at the Kaymoor parking area off Gatewood Road, south of Fayetteville. Not recommended with young children or in wet conditions.

  • 821 wooden steps total on the descent and ascent
  • Dogs can struggle with steep stairs — use caution
  • Historic mine ruins and coke ovens at the base
  • Moderate fitness required at minimum — climb back is tough
  • Trekking poles strongly recommended for the return

Hiking FAQ — New River Gorge

What is the best hike in New River Gorge for first-timers?

Long Point Trail. It's 3.1 miles round-trip, manageable for most adults and older kids, and ends at one of the best views in the park — a direct side-on look at the New River Gorge Bridge from a rocky peninsula. Canyon Rim Boardwalk is easier and shorter if the group includes very young children or anyone who can't handle a full trail.

Are dogs allowed on hiking trails in New River Gorge National Park?

Yes — dogs are allowed on most hiking trails on a six-foot leash. Long Point Trail, Canyon Rim Boardwalk, Endless Wall Trail, and Burnwood Trail are all confirmed dog-friendly. The Kaymoor Miners Trail descent involves staircases that can be difficult for some dogs. Always carry water for your dog — the gorge holds heat and shade is limited on rim trails.

Are there easy hiking trails suitable for beginners or families with young kids?

Yes. Canyon Rim Boardwalk is paved and flat — accessible for strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who wants a meaningful view without a trail. Burnwood Trail is a gentle 1.2-mile loop through old-growth forest. Long Point Trail is a moderate step up but manageable for most adults in reasonable fitness.

How long does Long Point Trail take?

Most people complete the out-and-back in 1.5 to 2 hours, including time at the overlook. The trailhead is off Long Point Road in Fayetteville — easy to find, low traffic, and free parking. No fee required for most NRG trail access.

What should I bring on a hike at New River Gorge?

Water — more than you think, especially in summer when the gorge holds heat. Sturdy footwear matters on rocky trails like Endless Wall and Kaymoor. Cell service is unreliable in the gorge — download trail maps from the NPS website before you go, or pick one up at Canyon Rim Visitor Center. Bug spray in summer, layers in fall.
